AI Shopping Agents Are Coming: How to Prepare Your Online Store

On 21 October 2026, Walmart announced infrastructure for AI shopping agents on Walmart and Sam's Club. Shoppers will be able to let an AI agent buy for them, with their own spending limits. Walmart's examples were $50, $100 or $200. Whether you run a small online store or a large catalogue, it is worth thinking now about how agents will see and use your website.

What Walmart announced

  • Agent Profiles: each authorised agent gets its own profile in the customer's account, so its purchases are separate from the customer's own. Walmart said it would launch these within about a month.
  • Spending limits: by default the customer approves each purchase. Optionally, the agent can buy within a limit the customer sets.
  • Walmart Agent Gateway: a direct channel for agents, described as an invitation-only beta.
  • Rules for agents: agents must act only on the shopper's intent, cannot receive or change payment card details, may access only data needed for the task, and can be blocked if they break the terms.

Reports also said Amazon blocked Meta's Muse agent from its store in September. Retailers are clearly taking different positions. We have not found a comparable announcement from an Indian retailer, so treat this as a signal of direction rather than a local requirement.

What this means for a smaller seller

AI agents and AI browsers will read your site the way a person does, only faster and less forgiving. Clear data is what makes you easy to buy from.

A readiness checklist

  1. Structured product data. Add schema.org Product and Offer markup with price, currency, availability and identifiers such as SKU.
  2. Accurate price and stock. Agents will compare. Wrong or stale information loses trust quickly.
  3. Clean product titles and attributes. Size, colour, material, weight and compatibility in plain fields, not buried in images.
  4. Clear policies. Shipping times, returns, warranty and cancellation rules should be easy to find and written plainly.
  5. Reliable product feeds and APIs if you sell through marketplaces.
  6. Simple, accessible checkout. Clean forms and standard payment flows work better for both people and software.
  7. A bot policy. Decide what automated visitors may do, and set rate limits so they cannot overload your site.
  8. Log and watch agent traffic in your analytics so you understand it.
  9. Never share sensitive payment data with any agent. Use your payment gateway's secure flows.

Questions to decide

  • Do you want agents to buy directly, or only to research?
  • Will you offer spending caps or extra approval for larger orders?
  • How will you handle returns for an order an agent placed by mistake?
