Odoo 20: What's New and Should You Upgrade?

Odoo ships a new major version every year at Odoo Experience in Brussels, and this year's release, Odoo 20, was announced for the 24-26 September 2026 event. Searches for it are climbing among companies already on Odoo and those about to start an ERP project. Here is a practical look at what is reported to be new, and how to decide whether to move.

Accuracy note: the feature list below comes from Odoo's roadmap previews and independent trackers. Confirm details against Odoo's official release notes before you plan an upgrade.

What's new in Odoo 20

1. AI moves into the background. Odoo 19 introduced an AI app where administrators configure agents. Odoo 20 is reported to go further, with AI running through everyday work:

  • Talking to an AI agent in plain language
  • AI that can create and update records
  • AI help for non-accountants inside the accounting app
  • AI assistance in website building and support
  • A timesheet assistant that suggests entries from your activity (it needs a local Odoo app on your computer)

2. Smarter finance. Reported changes include AI-assisted review of bank statements and reconciliations, a new Parent Account field that replaces Account Groups in the chart of accounts, and a no-depreciation option for assets.

3. Sales and CRM polish. A new sales dashboard, direct templates, a quote calculator, product images in quotes, and a marketplaces menu for your sales channels.

4. Operations and mobile. Kanban views for manufacturing and planning, a simpler payroll process in supported markets, and a redesigned mobile experience with better touch support.

Odoo 19 or Odoo 20: which should you implement on?

  • Already live on 18 or 19 and stable? There is no rush. Odoo 19 is mature and has a well-understood upgrade path to 20.
  • Starting a project that goes live in October or November? It can make sense to wait for the stable 20.x build and implement directly on it, rather than migrate a few months after go-live.
  • Year-end close approaching? Do not upgrade a live ERP in the middle of a financial year-end.

How to prepare for an upgrade

  1. Inventory your customisations. Standard modules usually upgrade smoothly. Custom code has to be ported by a developer who knows the new version.
  2. Check third-party apps and connectors. Payment gateways, shipping integrations and marketplace connectors must support the new version.
  3. Verify India localisation. Confirm that GST, e-invoicing, TDS and any compliance modules you rely on are supported before you touch production.
  4. Rehearse on a staging copy. Upgrade a copy of your database, test your ten most important workflows, and time the migration.
  5. Decide your AI rules up front. Choose which actions an AI agent may take on its own and which need human approval, and decide which AI provider your data is allowed to reach.

Frequently asked questions

When is Odoo 20 released?+

Odoo 20 was announced for Odoo Experience 2026 in Brussels (24-26 September 2026). Some reports expect general availability in October 2026, with a 20.1 build later in the year. Check Odoo's official site for the current status.

Will my custom Odoo modules work after upgrading?+

Not automatically. Standard modules generally upgrade smoothly, but custom code usually has to be reviewed and ported to the new version by a developer.

Should a new business start on Odoo 19 or wait for Odoo 20?+

If your go-live is only a few months away, implementing directly on a stable Odoo 20 build can save you a migration. If you need to go live sooner, Odoo 19 is a mature option with a clear upgrade path.
