Month-end reconciliation is where finance teams lose days. According to summaries of the Odoo 20 release notes, the new version aims to shorten that work and tighten how bills get paid. Here is what has been reported and how to prepare.

What is new for accounting
- Better bank reconciliation: auto-reconciliation rules, a reconciliation summary report and a clearer payment status flow.
- Pay bills from Odoo: a payment initiation interface lets you start vendor payments without leaving the app, depending on your bank and setup.
- Pre-filled bill lines: new bills can copy lines from earlier bills from the same vendor.
- Parent accounts replace account groups: the chart of accounts is organised through a Parent Account field.
- Depreciation models replace asset models.
- Currency translation line: key financial reports gain a Cumulative Translation Adjustment line for multi-currency groups.
- AI help: Odoo 20 also adds AI features for accounting, covered in our separate article on Odoo 20 AI agents.
Why it matters
- Fewer manual matches means a faster close.
- A summary report makes it easier to review what was matched automatically.
- Paying bills inside the ERP reduces copy-paste errors, but it also raises the stakes for approvals and access control.
Before you upgrade: a checklist
- Map your chart of accounts. Check how your existing groups convert into the parent-child structure and whether your reports still look right.
- Review asset setups. Confirm that depreciation methods and schedules carry across correctly.
- Test reconciliation rules on three months of real bank statements in staging. Measure the share matched automatically and review the wrong matches.
- Check payment initiation with your bank and any file formats it needs. Do not assume every bank is supported.
- Lock down approvals. Decide who can create, approve and release payments, and require two people for large amounts.
- Protect bank details. Changes to a vendor's bank account should always need verification outside Odoo, because fraudsters target exactly this.
- Involve your accountant in the test and compare closing balances with your current process.
A phased approach works best
Switch on automatic matching first, review the results for a month, and only then enable payment initiation. Small steps make problems easy to trace.
