Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): SEO for the AI Search Era

Search is no longer just a list of blue links. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity now write a direct answer, often naming the businesses they trust. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand one of those named sources. Search interest in GEO and its sibling, answer engine optimization (AEO), has surged from a very small base, and in India the shift is already visible: Google Gemini was the second most-searched topic in the country in Google's 2025 Year in Search.

GEO, AEO and SEO: how they differ

  • SEO aims to rank in a list of links.
  • AEO aims to be the extracted answer, such as a featured snippet or voice answer.
  • GEO aims to be cited or recommended inside an AI-written answer.

The honest truth is that they share most of their foundations. Clear content, technical health and real authority help in all three. Terminology is still unsettled, and plenty of tools are selling hype, so focus on fundamentals first.

Do not abandon classic SEO yet

Google still holds roughly 90% of search in India, according to StatCounter's September 2026 data. Traditional rankings continue to bring most search traffic. Think of GEO as an extra layer on top of good SEO, not a replacement.

Tactics that help you get cited

  1. Answer first. Put a clear, direct answer in the first lines of a page, then add depth. AI systems favour content they can lift cleanly.
  2. Use specifics. Original numbers, dates, prices, comparisons and named examples are easier to cite than vague claims. Research on generative engines found that adding statistics made content more likely to be cited.
  3. Structure for scanning. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables help both people and machines.
  4. Add FAQs with schema markup. Real questions with concise answers, marked up with FAQ and Organization schema, support rich results and clear entity signals.
  5. Keep your business facts consistent. Name, address, phone, services and descriptions should match across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  6. Build genuine authority. Case studies, expert authorship, reviews and mentions on respected sites all feed trust.
  7. Refresh important pages. Update cornerstone content with current data instead of letting it age.
  8. Let the right crawlers in. If you want to be cited, check that your robots.txt and firewall are not blocking AI crawlers by accident.

Fix the technical basics

Fast pages, clean HTML, mobile-friendly layouts and good Core Web Vitals still matter. Server-rendered frameworks such as Next.js make it easier to serve complete, crawlable content.

How to measure it

  • Check referral traffic from AI platforms in your analytics.
  • Ask the major AI tools the questions your customers ask, and note whether your brand appears and how it is described.
  • Track branded search growth, which often rises as AI mentions increase.
  • Treat dedicated GEO tools with some caution and compare their numbers with your own analytics.

A 30-day starter plan

  • Week 1: list your 20 most valuable customer questions.
  • Week 2: rewrite your top five pages answer-first, with data and FAQs.
  • Week 3: add schema markup and fix inconsistent business details.
  • Week 4: publish one original piece, such as a survey, benchmark or detailed case study, and start tracking AI referrals.
