Core Web Vitals are Google's measures of how a page feels to real visitors. They are back in the SEO conversation after reports that Google's March 2026 core update gave them more weight. Treat that claim with some caution: it comes mainly from agency analysis of ranking volatility, and Google has not quantified it. Either way, a fast, stable page helps visitors, conversions and search.
The three targets
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): under 2.5 seconds. How quickly the main content appears.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): under 200 milliseconds. How fast the page responds when someone taps or clicks. It replaced FID in March 2024.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): under 0.1. How much the layout jumps around while loading.
How to measure
- Google Search Console, Core Web Vitals report, for real-user data by page group.
- PageSpeed Insights, which shows field data from real users where available and lab data from a test.
- Chrome DevTools and Lighthouse for debugging.
- Your own analytics, if you collect web-vitals data.
Field data matters most, because real visitors use slower phones and networks than your office laptop.
Fixes for LCP
- Compress hero images and use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF.
- Set proper image sizes and preload the main image.
- Serve pages quickly with good hosting, caching and a CDN.
- Avoid heavy sliders and autoplay video above the fold.
- Reduce render-blocking CSS and scripts.
Fixes for INP
- Remove or delay third-party scripts, such as chat widgets, heat maps and tag managers.
- Break up long JavaScript tasks.
- Ship less JavaScript. Server rendering and lighter components help.
- Avoid heavy work on every click, such as large re-renders.
Fixes for CLS
- Always set width and height for images and video.
- Reserve space for ads, banners and cookie notices.
- Load fonts carefully so text does not jump.
- Avoid inserting content above existing content after load.
Quick wins we see often
- Oversized images, sometimes several megabytes each
- Too many tracking and marketing scripts
- Unoptimised fonts
- Cheap shared hosting with slow response times
- Plugins on WordPress sites that load on every page
Do not chase a perfect score
A score of 100 in a lab tool is not the goal. Aim to pass the three thresholds for most real users, and then focus on content quality, which still decides rankings.
A simple 30-day plan
- Week 1: measure and list the slowest templates.
- Week 2: fix images, fonts and hosting.
- Week 3: audit and trim third-party scripts.
- Week 4: re-measure, and set up monitoring so regressions are caught.
